Chest in-services for CBO Staff
As part of our mission, CHEST staff offer in-services tailored to the needs of AIDS service organizations (ASOs) and other agencies serving our community. CHEST in-services provide your staff with up-to-date scientific and research information, presented in a manner that makes it engaging and accessible for staff at all levels. Each in-service ends with a discussion of the implications of the information presented for client services and programs, as well as specific strategies that can be used to put this information into practice. CURRENT IN-SERVICE TOPICS INCLUDE:
Positive, Negative and Undecided: An Introduction to HIV Research Methods and Ethics
This in-service provides a general introduction to HIV research, including critical findings that have shaped HIV prevention and care efforts. We will discuss the ethics and politics of HIV research and its application and usefulness to community-based organizations. This in-service can be tailored for presentation to clients.
New Frontiers in HIV Prevention: PEP, PREP, microbicides, and other emerging technologies
This in-service reviews current findings and policy relating to new biomedical approaches to prevention, including Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), and microbicides. This in-service can be tailored for presentation to clients.
Sex on the Brain: How problems with decision-making affect behavior for high-risk clients
This in-service discusses how issues such as impulsivity and poor decision-making strategies impact HIV-related behavior, including both sexual risk-taking and medication adherence. Implications for working with clients are discussed, and specific strategies are presented.
At Your Age? Special Issues in the Care and Support of HIV+ Adults over 50
This in-service describes emerging issues in the treatment of older adults living with HIV. In addition to discussing special issues relevant to HIV+ older adults more generally, the in-service focuses on sexuality-related concerns and the provision of support to this critical population.
Engaging Hard to Reach Clients: An Introduction to Motivational Interviewing
This in-service provides a basic overview of the basic theory and concepts inherent in motivational interviewing (MI). It introduces participants to the "Stages of Change," and discusses ways of applying MI principles to every-day work with clients.
Shaken not Stirred: An Update on Interactions between Drugs, Alcohol, and HIV Medications
This in-service discusses the ways in which substance use impacts HIV medications and other common medications taken by HIV + persons. Strategies for talking about drug interactions with clients are discussed. This in-service can be tailored for presentation to clients.
